State Administrators

ADA SoCal Endorses Samuel Sukaton for State Board of Equalization

Over the last fifteen years, Sam has worked at the intersection of public policy, legislative advocacy, and community organizing. He directed Senator Bernie Sanders’s 2020 campaign in Inland Southern California. He’s led climate budget investment and redistricting campaigns with California Environmental Voters. Most recently, as Lead Organizer for AFT Local 1521, the LA Community College Faculty Guild, he’s organizing students and representing faculty in the Los Angeles Community College District — the largest community college district in California

He’s worked before with the California Public Utilities Commission, Energy Commission, Air Resources Board, and Natural Resources Agency, gaining first-hand experience with how California’s investments in clean energy, climate resilience, and innovative land use move us all toward a sustainable and healthy future.

That experience has moved him to run for the Board of Equalization, which oversees California’s property-tax system and ensures revenues that fund schools, cities, and counties are collected and distributed fairly and spent on the infrastructure Californian’s need. From disaster relief to clean energy to basic school funding, Californians need – and deserve – more.

ADA SoCal Endorses Tony Vasquez for State Treasurer

Affordable Housing

The top challenge California faces is affordable housing. Tony will streamline permitting requirements and offer tax benefits to incentivize new housing development. He will also continue efforts like the educational campaign launched to help low-income housing applicants claim property tax exemptions.

Education

Our educational institutions should be a priority for in-state investment. Tony will make sure an all-star team of professionals helps dial in a plan to build up California’s public education.

A champion for the Latino community

Tony will champion equal rights for all, including the Latino community, which often remains disenfranchised from the State’s financial prowess. Cities throughout California, especially emerging Latino-controlled entities, are the catalyst for prosperity and creative energy.

Nichelle Henderson for State School Superintendent

ADA SoCal Endorses Nichelle Henderson State School Superintendent

My career in public education spans 30 years. I began as a parent volunteer in my child’s pre-K classroom, then became a teaching assistant and CSEA member in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). I later taught sixth-grade math and science as a CEA/NEA member in the Compton Unified School District. Today, I teach teachers, mentoring and supporting future educators as a Faculty Advisor and Clinical Field Supervisor in a state-funded teacher preparation program in the California State University system.

The oldest of three children, I was born and raised in Los Angeles County by my mother, a licensed vocational nurse (SEIU), and my father, an automotive mechanic (AFSCME). They taught me the dignity of work and the importance of standing up for others, values I have carried into my professional life.

I am an active union leader in the California Faculty Association (CFA/SEIU 1983), where I have served on the Statewide Representation Committee, chaired the Faculty Rights Team at Cal State LA, participated on the statewide bargaining team, and represented educators as a delegate to the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.

In 2020, I was elected to the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees, and in 2024 I was re-elected with over 1,000,000 votes across Los Angeles County, more than any other candidate currently running for State Superintendent. I have served as Board President and chaired committees focused on student success, institutional effectiveness, legislation, and budget oversight. In these roles, I helped expand student enrollment, secure funding for childcare and student service centers, support students experiencing homelessness, win pay increases for faculty and staff, grow career pathways in fields like healthcare, biotech, and climate jobs, and establish a universal basic income program for students.

ADA SoCal Endorses Jane Kim for California State Insurance Commissioner

Jane Kim is running for Insurance Commissioner to continue her decades-long work advocating for Californians because, with premium rates rising and coverage declining, we need a Commissioner who will put people ahead of insurance company profits.

As a San Francisco Supervisor from 2011 to 2019, Jane represented a district encompassing both the city’s lowest-income residents and its wealthiest zip code. She fought for groundbreaking initiatives, including making San Francisco the only city in the nation to provide tuition-free Community College for all residents, enacting the nation’s strongest minimum wage law, and establishing a medical respite shelter for aging and sick homeless residents. She also led the single largest investment any U.S. city has made toward childcare, passing a tax on multimillion-dollar commercial real estate that now raises over $140 million annually to make universal affordable childcare a reality.

A longtime champion for affordable housing, Jane crafted the nation’s most robust tenant-protection ordinance to prevent unjust evictions. She also led and won the fight to raise the city’s affordable housing mandate from 12% to 25%, and secured an unprecedented 40% requirement in three major development projects within her district.

After leaving office, Jane served as the California Political Director for Bernie 2020 and as a Senior Fellow at both the Sanders Institute and the Young Elected Officials Network, a program of People for the American Way.

Over the last four years, Jane Kim served as the California Director for the Working Families Party where she recruited and trained the next generation of leaders ready to fight for working families. Jane also sought to achieve gender balance in the California Legislature as a member of the Board of Directors for Close the Gap California – a statewide initiative to achieve gender balance in the California Legislature.

She received her B.A. from Stanford University and her J.D. from the U.C. Berkeley School of Law.
