Americans for Democratic Action is a nationwide, multi-issue progressive/Left organization that was founded by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1947. The  Southern California Chapter is the largest and most active. We are working on supporting and electing progressive candidates who will put the needs of their constituents ahead of corporate donors. We are committed to Single-Payer Healthcare (Medicare For All), staving off the Climate Catastrophe that is bearing down on us and fighting against the corruptive influence of Big Money on our Electoral System.

Americans for Democratic Action, Southern California Chapter Urges Ceasefire, Solidarity Against Slaughter

 

In the wake of October's barbaric and deplorable violence by Hamas, we have seen many statements and demonstrations proclaiming Solidarity with Israel, and many words and events around the world proclaiming Solidarity with Palestine. 

Despite our empathy for Israelis anguished and rightfully enraged over barbarous attacks on innocent civilians, and for Palestinians anguished and rightfully angry over years of oppression and abuses under military occupation or confinement in the open-air prison of Gaza --indeed BECAUSE of empathy with victims of both kinds -- those who look to avert further tragedies and bloodshed must not be taking simplistic stands of "solidarity" with either Israel or Palestine.

 

ADA SoCal instead calls for solid opposition to war crimes by all parties, attacks on civilians by any forces, and for a solid stance by the U.S. government against escalation of the current crisis.

 

•  To minimize the likelihood of such escalation, and its costs in innocent lives, ADA SoCal urges the prompt release by Hamas of all civilian hostages, beginning with the immediate and unconditional release of children, the elderly and the medically infirm. 
   
• Whereas an escalation of bombing or attempted occupation of Gaza risks a wider war involving other Middle East actors, ADA SoCal stands with the United Nations and world opinion in calling for an immediate cessation of bombing of civilian targets and orders for mass evacuations. 
   
•   Whereas no party can effectively bomb its way to a lasting peace or stable security, ADA SoCal urges Congress to take a measured and carefully critical position on expanding military assistance to Israel, limiting that aid to purely defensive weaponry and not to providing equipment likely to be used against civilian populations. 
   
• Whereas such an escalation and the likelihood of U.S. forces being drawn in is increasingly apparent and a serious danger to Americans, both military and civilian, at home and abroad, ADA SoCal commends and supports the courageous call of some 18 progressive and peace-minded Congress members for a cease-fire, and condemns the unscrupulous campaign of propaganda suggesting that their stance constitutes "antisemitism." 
  
  
• Such accusations of prejudice are not only groundless but inhibit those honestly searching for alternatives to slaughter and toward a road toward peace. We urge members of Congress who have not yet joined the cease-fire call to do so.

•  Whereas the seeds of antisemitism and of Islamophobia linger just below the surface in America as in many countries, the escalation of Israeli-Arab conflict in the Middle East poses a threat to Jewish and Muslim Americans, a secondary but important reason for the U.S. government and all Americans to bend their utmost efforts toward a peaceful and just solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Ballots for the March 5 th California Primary Election have been arriving in our mailboxes. This is

a very challenging election facing us. So many of us on the Left are disheartened that President

Biden is enabling a horrific human rights crisis in Gaza. Some of the most dependable

Democratic constituencies; Young People, African Americans and Muslim Americans are so

distressed that they are thinking of sitting this election out. We mustn’t succumb to that kind of

despair. Even if you can’t bring yourself to cast a vote for the President, there are so many

other races on the ballot where Progressives who share our values are running against MAGA

Conservatives and Corporate Centrists, so there’s always a reason to vote!

ADEM ENDORSEMENTS

In the next few weeks, the California Democratic Party is holding ADEMs (Assembly District Election Meetings) where delegates are elected in each of California’s 80 Assembly districts. 

Electing Progressives to serve as delegates to the Party can help us in our struggle to make the California Democratic Party less-beholden to corporate interests and more responsive to the needs of the most vulnerable in our society.

ADA SoCal has endorsed the folks we believe to be the most progressive running in a lot of the districts where we have membership, but there are some districts that we don’t know which progressives are running, so reading Candidate Statements in those districts is helpful.

Many of our endorsed candidates are running on slates, a strategy that makes it easier to elect a group of good candidates. The vast majority of the folks we’ve endorsed are running on Progressive Slates. This website can be a resource to learn more about them:

More below, and how to find out if you are in the new AD51 - or what district you are in. but my ask today is just to register to vote by mail ASAP.  TODAY IS THE LAST DAY REGISTER NOW! This is an internal Democratic Party election, so the County Registrar won’t send you a ballot. Instead, you must request a ballot by Dec. 31. PLEASE Do it now so it’s not hanging over your holiday dinner table! I NEED EVERY VOTE WHICH I CAN GET.  Here’s how: 1.     Go to ademelections.com/register/mail. 2.     Enter the info corresponding to your voter registration and press “Submit.” If you need to check your voter registration data, email me. 3.     Follow the usual 2-step verification process on the next page. When prompted, enter the code you’re emailed. This will get you the PIN you’ll need to put on your ballot for it to count. Keep your PIN safe, but you can find it here if you lose it.   Your ballot should arrive around Jan. 6; votes due back by Jan. 31.     Your vote will be for delegates who will represent your decision for who you want for the office of President etc. of the Democratic Party.

Support Raphael Warnock for US Senate

  

 

Help make calls to Georgia to provide frequent Black Voters with their early voting locations, among other details on how to vote in the December 6, 2022 Raphael Warnock vs. Hershel Walker Senate runoff election. Early voting starts on November 28^th!

Getting Senator Warnock re-elected and having a 51 to 49 advantage will make a significant difference in the balance of power.  

If Reverend Warnock wins the December 2^nd Senate run-off, Democrats will have a majority on all Senate committees – that majority is essential for judiciary appointments, cabinet appointments, and for discharging petitions out of Senate committees. 

Having that 51^st senator will also make Machin irrelevant. 

Your calls to frequent Black voters can make all the difference in what promises to be a close run-off election.

California Ballot Measures:

RE-ENVISIONING SAFETY IN AMERICA

The horror of George Floyd's murder has inspired a deep debate about re-envisioning Public Safety in America.  The call to “Defund The Police!” does not mean the elimination of law enforcement -- it means divesting money from bloated police budgets and investing instead in people to deal proactively with addiction, homelessness and mental illness. Gun-toting police aren’t the answer to these problems.  So many police shootings occur in the context of these issues.  

Militarizing the Police hasn’t reduced crime. Neither has throwing more and more money at police departments.  It’s time to try something different.  Eugene, Oregon has been diverting money from its police to the hiring of medics and social workers to address addiction issues, mental illness or homelessness ---and it’s been very effective.

The latest Los Angeles City Budget was slated to devote 54% of discretionary funds to the LAPD.  Now, in response to the protests, the City Council is considering cutting between $100 and $150 million from Mayor Garcetti's original budget. But this is merely rolling back a yearly hike in spending — it's not the serious change that’s needed.  New York's City Council is talking about cutting $1 billion from their police budget, so LA could make more drastic cuts and fund needed community services. This would also free up police officers to do things they are uniquely suited to - such as solving crimes!

We’re asking LA Residents to call their City Council members and ask them to get serious about a new approach to public safety -- substantial cuts to LAPD and moving the money into community services for crime prevention and for non-violent crisis resolution. Tell them his is the moment for real substantive change, not merely trimming around the edges. Here is a list of Los Angeles City Council members:
